Esomeprazole( Esomeprazole ) is a proton pump inhibitor used to treat gastroesophageal reflux disease (GERD) in adults and children over the age of 14. It works by inhibiting the production of stomach acid by the proton pump in the stomach. Esomeprazole is often prescribed to patients who have reflux symptoms or are experiencing symptoms of gastroesophageal reflux disease (GERD). Esomeprazole works by increasing the amount of acid that is released from the stomach into the esophagus. It does this by blocking an enzyme called H+/K+ ATPase, which is responsible for breaking down the acid in the stomach. By lowering the level of acid in the stomach, esomeprazole reduces the amount of acid in the esophagus and thus promotes healing of the esophagus.
The recommended starting dose of esomeprazole is 2.5 mg to 5 mg per day, as directed by your doctor. Dosage may be increased to 5 mg once daily as directed by your doctor. You should take this medicine at the same time every day to ensure the best results. If you are taking another drug for GERD, take it at the same time each day to maintain the same therapeutic effect. Do not take other medicines to treat your GERD; this will not provide any benefit. Always follow your doctor’s instructions.
Esomeprazole may cause side effects such as headache, diarrhea, abdominal pain, and nausea. These effects usually disappear as your body adjusts to the medicine. In rare cases, esomeprazole may cause more serious side effects such as allergic reactions (difficulty breathing, swelling of the face, lips, or tongue), persistent nausea (rarely), skin rashes, or signs of liver problems (such as dark urine, swelling in the upper body, and abdominal pain). If any of these effects persist or worsen, tell your doctor promptly. Tell your doctor right away if you become pregnant or if you become breastfeeding.
